Got horrendously sick (allergies, general spring malaise) at the end of last week and missed an 8 mile run on 4-28. Also found out the medicine I was taking was making things worse. Still taking new medicine through Friday. Feeling pretty good, although, per the usual taper, everything is feeling like it's coming apart and like I've never run more than 10 miles in my life. I love it when a plan comes together.
4-25 - 4.1 miles. 36:39. 8:54 pace.
4-26 - 3.7 miles. 30:30. 8:19 pace.
4-30 - 3.2 miles. 29:05. 9:05 pace.
5-1 - 3.2 miles. 30:01. 9:22 pace.
5-3 - 3.2 miles. 29:10. 9:06 pace.
Forecast now has it in the upper 80's (vs. previous 90's prediction) and partly cloudy. With a 7am start I'm hoping to finish before the most extreme temps of the day. I haven't really thought about running 40 miles (41.2 actually) with any depth yet, when I have in passing I have quickly moved on as it seemed a bit overwhelming. So, here's to the unexpected.
Seay, Todd. Run!
Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us...

Another Batch of Training Runs
So, here is the update since I have become to lazy to record it after every run. Once again, runs under 3 miles were with my 8 year old daughter. The run on 4-13 I bonked. In the end I'm blaming the shoes and an unseasonably hot afternoon. The highlight was the weekend of 4-6 and 4-7 where I ran 22 and 15 mile runs back to back. I felt good both days, kept the pace steady (and under 9:30) and recovered well and quickly. I'm hoping that is a good sign for the 40 miler.
3-30 - 20.1 miles. 3:05:23. 9:14 pace.
4-2 - 5.6 miles. 49:03. 8:45 pace.
4-3 - 1.6 miles. 15:46. 9:55 pace.
4-4 - 5.5 miles. 45:23. 8:18 pace.
4-5 - 2.0 miles. 21:26. 10:29 pace.
4-6 - 22.0 miles. 3:24:45. 9:17 pace.
4-7 - 15.1 miles. 2:20:56 9:21 pace.
4-9 - 5.6 miles. 49:31. 8:54 pace.
4-11 - 5.2 miles. 44:41. 8:31 pace.
4-13 - 19.4 miles. 3:22:26. 10:26 pace.
4-14 - 3.5 miles. 28:52. 8:18 pace.
4-17 - 7.3 miles. 1:05:53. 9:01 pace.
4-19 - 6.0 miles. 47:06. 7:52 pace.
4-20 - 15.1 miles. 2:14:55. 8:57 pace.
4-23 - 12.1 miles. 1:46:28. 8:47 pace.
A little less than 2 weeks until the 40 miler (actually 41.2). Feeling pretty good. I'll spend the next couple of runs daydreaming about how fast I want to try and run the thing.
3-30 - 20.1 miles. 3:05:23. 9:14 pace.

Training Recap
This is the recap of my training since the Charlotte Ultra 50k on February 4th.
Generally it has been a warm spring. Normally my runs are in the morning. I am trying to run with my 7 (almost 8) year old daughter, so the sub 3 mile runs would be with her. Any other times over a 10:00 pace would be with someone else as well.
There will be some back-t0-backs in here as I am trying to gear up for another ultra. Depending on how my schedule and my training go I should be making a decision shortly.
2-10 - 3.0 miles. 24:18. 8:11 pace.
2-13 - 5.0 miles. 40:27. 8:03 pace.
2-20 - 5.4 miles. 44:49. 8:23 pace.

3-1 - 13.4 miles. 2:05:49. 9:25 pace.
3-2 - 1.2 miles. 13:39. 11:06 pace.

3-21 - 5.0 miles. 41:35. 8:21 pace.
3-22 - 1.6 miles. 17:04. 10:42 pace.
3-23 - 18.8 miles. 2:58:07. 9:29 pace.
3-24 - 12.0 miles. 1:59:54. 9:07 pace.

3-28 - 6.4 miles. 52:04. 8:06 pace.
3-29 - 1.6 miles. 16:55. 10:38 pace.
And looking at today's run - it was with my daughter - and ridiculously I rolled my left ankle while handing her some water. I believe it is just a little sore - nothing serious, but we will see tomorrow.

At Long Last, Charlotte Ultra 50K Review
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, February 4th more precisely, I ran the Charlotte Ultra 50K. 31 miles for the non-metrical. After that I haven't blogged. Someday I'll figure out how to do this regularly - or I'll figure out not to do it at all. So here is the run down best as I can remember.
It was a cold and dreary day. Rain was forecast and was not disappointing. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
It was a good day. The course was a total of five 6.2 out and backs. Never done the lap thing before but I ended up liking it immensely. Every 6 miles I was back with "my stuff," being cheered on by my family, and I knew after the first out and back what I was up against, and it was a nice course, imo. The rain was intermittent at first, steady for the middle 15, and then gone for the last 5. It got pretty muddy and slick in one section of the course, but you could dance around that section.
Most memorable moment for me was when I realized that I was thinking I only have two more laps to go - which meant I had just finished 18.6 miles and had 12.4 miles to go - but thinking about it in laps made it seem like much less.
I believe I ran the first 24.8 miles in @3:30 and then I tanked a little and it took me 1:15 to run the last 6.2. Other than that (and it was the first time I had ever ran farther than 26.2 miles) I thought it was an excellent run and that overall I performed better than I expected. I look forward to my next ultra.

Training, 02-02-12
So it was a perfect morning. Perfect weather. Nothing was sore. I would say that I ran too fast, but I simply didn't feel like I was running fast at all. It was the best feeling I have had in a long time - just enjoying the run. 3.7 miles, 29:27, 8:04 pace. So, Saturday I will go, run 31 miles in the Charlotte Ultra Run, and cripple myslef for a couple of weeks. Such is the life of long distance running.

Training, 01-30-12
@60 degrees. 3.2 miler taper, 27:10, 8:30 pace. Legs a lot stiffer and more tired than previous tapers. Still thinking it might be from the 60 mile week. Hopefully it pays off Saturday.

Training, 01-28-12
Upper 40's and sunshine. 7.9 miles, 1:07:42, 8:32 pace. A few 3 mile runs and then we see about this 50k business.
